Making surveillance prettier is not a fix. XKEYSCORE, PRISM: Obama ignores latest surveillance revelations at press conference.

We are not talking about the content of our communication, so ignore any “I’ve got nothing to hide” arguments. This is about the arena in which we play. An indiscriminately surveilled society’s freedom is illusory. Today’s civilian is tomorrow’s terrorist, if someone with authority say so and there is no consequential scrutiny of that evaluation. The NSA informs the DEA. Obama forgot to mention that. A NSA website? Are you kidding?

Then again, maybe all freedom is illusory.
